A Step-by-Step Guide to Your Vision System

The articles are typically divided into four steps, where our vision advisors recommend the best hardware and software for your application.

Industrial Camera Selection

Choosing the right industrial camera is one of the most important steps. A deep understanding of the application and project helps our vision advisors suggest the best option. Therefore, an online meeting with them is always beneficial. This allows them to make key questions to determine, for example, if a USB3 interface or a GigE interface is more appropriate based on your distance needs, or to find more specific details like the required frame rate. They also need to understand if you need color or monochrome camera and if your object is moving or not, to determine if a rolling shutter or global shutter camera is more suitable.

Machine Vision Lens Selection

With the right camera chosen, we move on to selecting the best machine vision lens based on the working distance, resolution and sensor size.

  • Working Distance: The distance between the lens and the object being imaged.
  • Resolution: Matching lens resolution to your camera sensor ensures optimal image quality.
  • Sensor Size: The size of your camera sensor influences compatible lens options.

For this, the lens calculator is a very useful tool helping to calculate the focal length that matches the requirements. There are cases that a telecentric lens is the best option, while other cases a standard C-mount lens can work perfectly. For bigger sensor sizes, an F-mount lens can be suggested.

Machine Vision Lighting

With a camera and a lens, now it is the time to find out if machine vision lighting is necessary, selecting between bar lights, ring lights, spot lights and more. We have a large portfolio of lighting, but we understand that some applications require unique lighting solutions. In this case, we offer custom lighting options, always finding the perfect solution for your application.

Computer Vision Software

Once you have the hardware, our experts recommend the best computer vision software to match your specific needs. Industrial cameras are used in combination with computer vision software for image processing and to automate processes. Essentially, a single industrial camera on its own is not a complete machine vision system. The computer vision software communicates with the industrial camera to capture images. The software then uses algorithms to detect important characteristics for image processing. From selecting the perfect camera to fine-tuning the ideal lighting setup, we are here to guide you every step of the way.
