Robotics Inspection Vision System

Max Reijngoudt

Implementing a high-quality vision system is crucial for inspecting the intricate details of robotic vision systems. This is especially important for projects that might need smaller machine vision hardware or irregularities with spacing. We understand that selecting the right machine vision setup and software can be challenging. Our machine vision products are designed to simplify this process, offering accessible pricing and detailed information to support robotics vision inspection.

Robotics Inspection Vision System

A customer approached VA Imaging with a requirement for a robotics application, aiming to monitor using a high-performance camera. The cameras were mounted on a long beam attached to a tractor, allowing for field traversal. With a high frame rate (FPS) and megapixel count, the system could detect both small and large objects needed. This enabled the customer to automate the robots and their application by targeting both obstacles and boundaries.

Machine Vision Camera Selection

Choosing the right camera is the first step in this application. Following the customer's specifications, the inspection of seeds and coatings demanded high resolution for detailed analysis. We recommended the VEN 302-56U3C-M06 Camera for its high resolution and imaging capabilities, essential for distinguishing obstacles and fine details needed to move around a desired space.

Since the components move intermittently during inspection, the camera required a global shutter for precise image capture without distortion. Additionally, a color camera ensured clear visualization of intricate parts. To protect the camera sensor in an industrial environment, we recommended our industrial machine vision housing, rated IP67 for durability.

Camera Specifications:

  • Resolution Requirement: A minimum of 2000 x1000 pixels was needed, calculated at three pixels per smallest detail. The VEN-302-56U3C-M06, with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, met this requirement. This was also chosen as a camera due to ts board-level options to keep the ability to have the sensor in a tight space.
  • Environmental Protection: Although this application did not need industrial machine vision housings enclosures, industrial housing ensures performance in humid conditions. Learn more about global shutter technology in our Knowledge Center.

Machine Vision Lens Selection

With the resolution established, we utilized our online lens calculator to identify the appropriate lens. The VEN-302-56U3C-M06 camera features a 1.1/8" sensor. Based on the customer’s requirements, an 8MM lens was selected for a field of view (FOV) of approximately 100 x 75 mm. The VA LCM-5MP-08MM-F1.4-015 was the most suitable option, providing an FOV of 103.3 x 77.5 mm. To achieve the precise FOV, a 1mm close-up ring or a 5mm close-up ring could be used to adjust the FOV that would best suit your application. This specific application did not need the use of any close-up rings.

Industrial Camera Setup

The customer opted for a single-camera configuration mounted on a metal beam. This setup included the VEN-302-56U3C-M06 camera paired with the VA-LCM-5MP-08MM-F1.4-015 lens, ensuring high-quality image capture suited for robotics inspection. A 1-meter USB3 cable was used for connectivity to keep the spacing small.

For stability, we recommended a mounting plate to secure the camera and lens to the robot. This setup ensures precise alignment and consistent inspection accuracy. For other custom
configurations, refer to our mounting options page.

Machine Vision Lighting for Inspection

To ensure optimal image quality, we recommend two spotlights to create an environment conducive to inspecting robotic components. In low-light conditions, additional machine vision lighting options may be necessary. This specific project had enough ambient light to not need the use of machine vision lighting but if you need additional lighting, contact us through the customer support form for tailored lighting solutions.

Image Processing Software

While our cameras, lenses, and lighting provide robust hardware, specific applications may require advanced software integration. Our cameras are GenICam-compatible and work seamlessly with third-party programs like:

  • NI LabVIEW
  • MvTec Halcon
  • Cognex VisionPro
  • Matlab
  • OpenCV

We also offer a free Software Development Kit (SDK) for initial programming, compatible with ARM platforms (e.g., Raspberry Pi, NVIDIA TX series) and operating systems like Android, Linux, and Windows. For this robotics application, the customer utilized our SDK, which is also suitable for your unique needs.
