Cameras with Sony IMX287 Sensor: Specs, Prices & Life Cycle

Sony IMX287 image sensor specifications

The Sony IMX287 is a high-performance CMOS image sensor designed for industrial and machine vision applications. It features a resolution of 0.41 megapixels (720x540), a pixel size of 6.9μm, and a global shutter type. The IMX287 can achieve a maximum frame rate of 528fps at full resolution for USB3 interface and 302 fps for GigE interface. The Sony IMX287 image sensor belongs to the Sony Pregius 2nd Generation.  On the same generation you can find models with resolutions 1.6 MP (IMX273 and IMX296), 3.1 MP (IMX252 and IMX265), 5 MP (IMX250 and IMX264), 8.9MP (IMX255 and IMX267), 12.3 MP (IMX253 and IMX304) and 31.4MP (IMX342).

2nd generation Pregius sensors vs 4th generation Pregius S sensors

Sony's 2nd and 4th generation IMX sensors show clear technological progress. IMX287 belongs to the 2nd gen sensors. They have 3.45 μm pixels, offering resolutions up to 12 MP. They perform well
in low light and can achieve high frame rates, especially in their high-speed versions. The 4th gen Pregius S sensors use smaller 2.74 μm pixels, allowing for higher resolutions up to 24.5 MP. Despite smaller pixels, they maintain good sensitivity thanks to improved design. These newer sensors also introduce advanced features like dual ADC and exposure time monitoring. They use stacked CMOS technology, which helps maintain performance despite the smaller pixel size. In essence, while 2nd gen sensors are still capable, the 4th gen sensors offer higher resolution, more features, and better efficiency, making them more suitable for advanced imaging applications.

Sony Pregius 2nd generation is still one of the most light sensitive solutions for standard machine vision cameras. A light sensitivity comparison between 2nd and 4th generation can be found in this article.
