Understanding PoE Technology

PoE integrates power and data within a single Ethernet cable, simplifying the installation process and reducing equipment costs. It is particularly useful in environments where power outlets are inaccessible. Our MER2 series adheres to the IEE 802.3af standard, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of devices.

  • The power specifications of the MER series are 12VDC-10% supplied via the camera’s 8 pin Hirose Connector or Power over Ethernet (IEE 802.3af standard)
  • The power specifications of the MER2 series are 12VDC-10% or 24VDC+10% supplied via the camera’s 8 pin Hirose Connector or Power over Ethernet (IEE 802.3af standard)

Setting up PoE with a GigE Camera

To use PoE with a GigE camera, ensure to have one of these: PoE Switch, PoEInjector. GigE PoE Adapter along with a CAT6 network cable. The ways to power a GigE camera are as follows:

Integrating a GigE Poe industrial
camera with a PoE switch:

A Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch simplifies connectivity by delivering both power and data through a single CAT6 network cable. This streamlined setup eliminates the need for an external power supply when using a GigE industrial camera equipped with PoE capabilities. The example below illustrates how to establish a reliable connection between a GigE PoE industrial camera and a computer via a PoE switch, ensuring seamless data and power transmission.

Integrating a GigE PoE industrial camera without a PoE switch:

A PoE injector is designed to add power to the data transmitted through a CAT6 network cable. It includes a “Data In” port for receiving network data and a “Data + Power Out” port for delivering both power and data to the connected device. While the injector does not extend the cable length, it ensures seamless power and data transmission to your GigE PoE camera.

Integrating a GigE PoE industrial camera with an adapter:

Alternatively, you can integrate a GigE PoE adapter directly into your computer. This adapter enables the computer to deliver both power and data through a single CAT6 network cable. By connecting the network cable from the computer to the GigE camera, the camera receives power over Ethernet without requiring an external power source or additional devices. Both methods offer seamless integration for powering GigE cameras in applications where a PoE switch is unavailable. The diagrams below illustrate how each solution can be implemented to connect a GigE camera with PoE to a computer or network.

Integrating a GigE industrial camera without PoE using I/O Port:

For GigE industrial cameras, an alternative to Power over Ethernet (PoE) is to supply power through the camera's I/O port by connecting an external power source. This method is compatible with all GigE cameras, including both PoE-enabled and non-PoE models.

When using this setup, the CAT6 / CAT5 Ethernet cable  is utilized solely for data communication, such as transmitting images and configuring camera parameters, while power is delivered through the I/O port.

The diagram below illustrates how to connect the I/O port of a GigE camera to an external power source while maintaining data communication through a CAT6 / CAT5 network cable. This setup ensures efficient and reliable operation for various industrial applications.
