The interface rate does not guarantee a particular camera frame rate. Actual performance also depends on sensor readout, resolution, exposure time, pixel format, network configuration and computer capacity.

GigE Vision provides a standardised method for transferring machine vision images over Ethernet, while GenICam provides a common way to access supported camera controls and features.

How to Choose Between 5GigE and 10GigE Cameras

Choose between 5GigE and 10GigE cameras by comparing the amount of image data your application must transfer.

When Should You Choose a 5GigE Camera?

Choose a 5GigE camera when standard GigE has become a limitation, but the application does not require the full capacity of 10GigE. It can be suitable for higher-resolution inspection, increased frame rates, detailed measurement and upgrades to existing Ethernet-based vision systems.

Applications with lower image-data requirements may be better served by standard GigE or 2.5GigE cameras.

When Should You Choose a 10GigE Camera?

Choose a 10GigE camera when high resolution, high frame rate or increased image bit depth produces a particularly large image stream. Common examples include large-format sensors, fast production inspection, motion analysis, scientific imaging and data-intensive multi-camera systems.

A faster interface does not automatically increase the performance of every camera. The sensor, exposure time, image format and host computer must also support the required acquisition rate.

Estimating Image Bandwidth

A simplified raw image-data estimate can be calculated using:

Number of pixels × frames per second × bits per pixel ÷ 8

For example:

  • A 5-megapixel monochrome stream at 60 fps and 8 bits per pixel produces approximately 300 MB/s.
  • A 12-megapixel stream using the same settings produces approximately 720 MB/s.

These are illustrative calculations, not specifications from individual VA Imaging cameras. Actual bandwidth also depends on exact resolution, pixel format, pixel packing, region of interest, packet configuration and network overhead.

The theoretical line rate of 5GigE is 625 MB/s. The 12-megapixel example would therefore exceed the 5GigE line rate and would normally require 10GigE, or a reduction in resolution, frame rate or image area.

What Is Required for a 5GigE or 10GigE Camera System?

A complete 5GigE or 10GigE camera system requires compatible network, power, optical, lighting and software components.

Network Interface and Computer Capacity for 5GigE & 10GigE Cameras

A traditional frame grabber is not always required for GigE Vision. The computer does, however, require a compatible network interface capable of handling the selected Ethernet speed and image-data volume.

For continuous full-bandwidth operation, use a dedicated 5GigE or 10GigE interface card. VA Imaging currently offers interface cards for GigE, 2.5GigE, 5GigE and 10GigE connections.

The host computer must also provide enough:

  • PCIe bandwidth
  • Working memory
  • Processor capacity
  • Storage performance

For multi-camera installations, calculate the combined data rate of all connected cameras rather than assessing each camera separately.

10GigE Camera Cable and Power Requirements in the UK

VA Imaging’s compatible 10GigE cables are designed to support maximum bandwidth over distances of up to 50 metres. Cable lengths below 30 metres are recommended for optimal performance.

The current VA Imaging 10GigE camera series does not support Power over Ethernet. A separate I/O cable is required to supply camera power.

Daheng Galaxy SDK for 5GigE & 10GigE Cameras

The Daheng Galaxy SDK provides software for configuring and integrating compatible Daheng Imaging cameras.

Available packages include Windows, Linux ARM and Linux x86 versions. Programming samples include C++, C#, DirectShow, LabVIEW and Python, depending on the selected SDK package. The downloads also include Galaxy Viewer and an IP configuration tool.

How to Select a High-Speed Ethernet Machine Vision Camera

Select a high-speed Ethernet machine vision camera by matching its resolution, frame rate, shutter, sensor and image output to the application.

Resolution and frame rate: Higher resolutions capture more detail but create larger image streams. The required frame rate should be based on object speed, inspection time and the number of images needed for each product.

Global or rolling shutter: A global shutter captures the complete image at one moment and is generally preferred for moving objects. A rolling shutter may be suitable for stationary subjects or slower processes.

Monochrome or colour: Monochrome cameras are often used for measurement, defect detection and low-light imaging. Colour cameras are useful when colour information is required for classification, sorting or quality control.

Image bit depth: Higher bit depths provide more intensity levels but also increase the amount of data that must be transferred. The 5GigE or 10GigE designation describes interface speed, not whether a camera supports 8-bit, 10-bit or 12-bit output.

Sensor, lens and lighting: Sensor size, field of view, working distance and required detail determine the appropriate lens. Lighting must provide sufficient brightness and contrast for the required exposure time.

Frequently Asked Questions About 5GigE and 10GigE Cameras

Choose 5GigE when standard GigE cannot carry the required image data, but the stream remains within the capacity of a 5GbE connection.

Choose 10GigE for more demanding combinations of high resolution, high frame rate, increased image bit depth or multiple cameras.

Connect a GigE camera to a compatible Ethernet interface using a cable rated for the required network speed.

Supply power through PoE or a separate power connection, depending on the camera. Install the supported SDK, configure the network adapter and confirm that the software detects the camera.

5GigE and 10GigE cameras need a compatible high-speed Ethernet interface but do not always require a traditional frame grabber.
