What to Consider When Choosing a Machine Vision Enclosure

The correct machine vision enclosure must fit the camera, lens, connectors and cables without obstructing the optical path.

Check the following before selecting a protective housing:

  • Environment: Determine whether the camera will be exposed to dust, rain, water splashes or high humidity.
  • Camera dimensions: The standard and aluminium housings support cameras up to 29 × 29 mm. The XL model supports cameras up to 44 × 44 mm.
  • Lens diameter: The standard and aluminium models support lenses up to 40 mm. The XL model supports lenses up to 74 mm.
  • Lens length: Measure from the front of the camera body to the front of the lens to determine the required lens-tube length.
  • Connector position: Allow sufficient clearance for the camera interface, power and I/O connectors.
  • Temperature: Additional heat-management measures are recommended when the ambient temperature exceeds 35°C.
  • Cable routing: Confirm the cable diameter, connector size and available bend radius.
  • Mounting space: Leave enough room to install the housing and remove the lens tube during setup.

The standard and aluminium models are designed for compact industrial cameras. The XL machine vision camera housing provides additional space for larger camera bodies, connectors and lenses.

For lenses wider than approximately 30 mm, protruding focus or aperture screws may need to be replaced with a flat screw set. The complete camera, lens and cable configuration should always be checked before ordering.

IP67 protection does not automatically make the enclosure suitable for high-pressure washdown, aggressive chemicals or specialist hygienic environments. These applications should be reviewed separately.

Modular Lens Tubes for Different Lens Lengths

The modular lens tube allows the machine vision camera housing to accommodate lenses of different lengths.

The standard enclosure is supplied with a lens tube and two 15 mm extension rings. Based on the camera and mounting position, the supplied components can accommodate approximate lens lengths of:

  • Up to 15 mm without an extension ring
  • Up to 30 mm with one extension ring
  • Up to 45 mm with two extension rings

Additional 15 mm extension rings are available for longer lenses. The standard housing can support lens lengths up to approximately 105 mm when the required optional rings are used.

The lens tube uses a bayonet fitting, making it quick to remove during focus and aperture adjustment. Once the vision system has been configured, the tube can be closed to help prevent accidental changes.

The optical window transmits visible and near-infrared wavelengths from approximately 400 to 1000 nm. UV, SWIR, polarised and specialist laser applications should be checked separately.

Waterproof Cable Entry for GigE, USB3 and I/O

The waterproof cable-entry system allows compatible standard machine vision cables to be used without requiring a complete specialist IP67 cable assembly.

The system supports compatible:

  • GigE cables
  • GigE PoE connections
  • USB3 cables
  • Power and I/O cables

The waterproof termination has been tested with specified VA Imaging cables. High-flex cables and cables from other suppliers may have different diameters or outer materials and should therefore be checked separately.

A dedicated cable gland is provided for an I/O cable and is closed with a plug when it is not in use.

Camera Compatibility Across Multiple Brands

The standard machine vision camera housing supports selected 29 × 29 mm cameras from several manufacturers.

Compatible camera families may include selected models from:

  • Daheng Imaging

  • JAI
  • Cognex

Three adapter plates are supplied with the standard housing. The required plate depends on the camera model, mounting-hole pattern and connector arrangement.

Compatibility must be checked using the exact camera and lens model. A supported manufacturer name does not guarantee that every camera from that brand will fit.

Cooling and Heat Management for Camera Enclosures

Heat management helps keep the enclosed industrial camera within its recommended operating temperature.

The aluminium components of the enclosure transfer heat away from the camera body. When the ambient temperature exceeds approximately 35°C, the housing should be attached to a metal machine frame or profile to improve passive cooling through conduction.

The actual camera temperature depends on:

  • Camera power consumption
  • Frame rate and exposure settings
  • Ambient temperature
  • Airflow around the housing
  • Enclosure material
  • Mounting method
  • Heat generated by nearby equipment

Compressed-air or Peltier cooling may be considered for specialist installations. Any active cooling method must be designed carefully to prevent condensation and excessive thermal stress.

High-temperature applications should be tested under realistic production conditions.

It was easy to integrate and USB3 Vision interface allowed our software team to get started quickly. The sales guy was very helpful with selecting the hardware for us. We are happy that we selected the USB3 board-level camera instead of a Mipi embedded vision camera as we didn't require now the additional driver development.

After installation on our laboratory we were surprised again of the high quality of the photos and the versatility of this system. (options in Galaxy viewer and integration in Python. Recently we had an issue with the software and the customer support was able to give us the relevant information to fix it within one day. The next time we need a camera we will not be looking to other suppliers but contact GeT Cameras immediately.

Unfortunately they don't offer a loan service, but I decided to try it. I had the cameras in house within 2 weeks and connection was easy. The SDK looks like the SDK from Basler so I felt directly comfortable with it. The camera and lens was a perfect match and now I'm able to read small DMC codes on large products with just a single camera.
