Microscope lenses are used when an industrial imaging system needs to resolve details that are too small for a conventional machine vision lens. VA Imaging supplies C-mount microscope lenses for high-magnification inspection, research and digital microscopy applications throughout the United Kingdom. Microscope Lenses for Industrial Inspection

Industrial microscope lenses provide high magnification over a small field of view, making them suitable for inspecting fine structures, surface details and very small components.

Each VA Imaging microscope lens combines a microscope objective with a 1X C-mount lens tube. The objective provides the high-magnification image, while the lens tube connects the optical system to a compatible C-mount industrial camera.

Choosing Between 10X and 50X Microscope Lenses

Choosing between 10X and 50X microscope lenses depends on the smallest feature that must be resolved, the required field of view and the available working distance.

The 10X microscope lens provides a longer working distance and greater depth of focus, leaving more space around the part for positioning and illumination.

The 50X microscope lens provides higher magnification and finer specified optical resolution. Its shorter working distance and shallower depth of focus require more precise positioning.

Increasing magnification also reduces the field of view, so the smallest inspection area required should be considered before selecting 50X.

Which Microscope Lens Specifications Matter?

The most important microscope lens specifications are magnification, optical resolution, numerical aperture, working distance, depth of focus and wavelength range.

Optical Resolution and Numerical Aperture

Optical resolution describes the smallest detail the lens is specified to resolve, while numerical aperture is related to light collection and resolving capability.

The 10X range has an NA of 0.45 and specified optical resolution of 0.61 µm. The 50X range has an NA of 0.67 and specified optical resolution of 0.41 µm.

Working Distance and Depth of Focus

The 10X lenses provide a 15 mm working distance and 1.36 µm depth of focus. The 50X lenses provide a 10 mm working distance and 0.61 µm depth of focus.

Higher magnification therefore leaves less space for positioning and requires more accurate focus control.

Designed Wavelength

The designed wavelength should be considered together with the illumination and camera sensitivity.

The 10X series covers 420–680 nm, while the 50X series covers 420–1100 nm.

Matching a Microscope Lens to an Industrial Camera

A microscope lens and industrial camera should be selected as one optical system.

VA Imaging microscope lenses support compatible C-mount cameras with sensor sizes up to 1.1". Sensor size affects the area captured, while pixel size and camera resolution influence how much of the optical detail produced by the lens can be sampled.

Magnification, pixel size, sensor size, field of view and optical resolution should therefore be considered together.

USB3 and GigE industrial cameras can be used where high-magnification images need to be transferred directly to a computer or inspection system for processing, measurement or documentation.

Microscope lenses with coaxial illumination are useful when high-magnification inspection involves flat or reflective surfaces.

Models ending in -CO contain a coaxial light input. Light can be introduced approximately along the viewing axis, helping illuminate reflective surfaces such as metal, printed circuit boards and semiconductor components.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microscope Lenses

Working distance should provide enough space between the lens and inspected object for positioning and illumination. VA Imaging 10X microscope lenses provide a 15 mm working distance, while the 50X versions provide 10 mm.

Depth of focus determines how much variation in object position can remain acceptably focused. At higher magnification, the available depth of focus becomes smaller, so stable mounting and precise positioning become increasingly important.

Numerical aperture is related to the light-gathering and resolving capability of the microscope objective. The VA Imaging 10X range has an NA of 0.45, while the 50X range has an NA of 0.67.

It was easy to integrate and USB3 Vision interface allowed our software team to get started quickly. The sales guy was very helpful with selecting the hardware for us. We are happy that we selected the USB3 board-level camera instead of a Mipi embedded vision camera as we didn't require now the additional driver development.

After installation on our laboratory we were surprised again of the high quality of the photos and the versatility of this system. (options in Galaxy viewer and integration in Python. Recently we had an issue with the software and the customer support was able to give us the relevant information to fix it within one day. The next time we need a camera we will not be looking to other suppliers but contact GeT Cameras immediately.

Unfortunately they don't offer a loan service, but I decided to try it. I had the cameras in house within 2 weeks and connection was easy. The SDK looks like the SDK from Basler so I felt directly comfortable with it. The camera and lens was a perfect match and now I'm able to read small DMC codes on large products with just a single camera.
