Why Use a 90 Degree Industrial Camera?

A 90 degree industrial camera gives engineers more freedom when the available mounting space dictates how the vision system can be arranged.

A standard industrial camera works well when there is sufficient room behind and around the imaging position. In compact machinery, however, the camera may compete for space with guards, actuators, conveyors, tooling or other automation components.

Changing the camera orientation can make it easier to incorporate machine vision without redesigning the entire surrounding structure.

This is particularly valuable when developing equipment around a fixed enclosure or adding vision to an existing machine. In these situations, the camera needs to work around the mechanical design rather than the mechanical design being created around the camera.

Compact Camera Integration Without Compromising the Inspection

A compact installation should still meet the optical requirements of the inspection.

Reducing the physical space used by the camera does not change the need for the correct field of view, working distance and image detail. These requirements should therefore be established before the final camera and lens combination is selected.

For example, moving a camera simply to make it fit may change the required focal length or prevent the lens from capturing the full inspection area. The position of the lighting can also become more difficult when space is limited.

A successful right-angle installation therefore considers the camera, lens, illumination and mounting position as one system. The aim is not simply to use the smallest possible camera, but to create a compact arrangement that still produces the image required for reliable inspection.

When Is a Right Angle Camera the Better Option?

A right angle camera is worth considering when the normal direction of the camera body creates a physical obstacle in the machine.

This can occur in enclosed inspection cells, compact test equipment, electronics machinery, robotic systems and OEM products. It can also be useful when machine vision is being added to existing equipment and the original design did not reserve much space for a camera.

Retrofitting is a good example. The ideal viewing position may already be determined by the object being inspected, while the surrounding framework leaves limited room for the imaging hardware. A right-angle configuration provides another way to position the camera without changing the inspection point itself.

The same principle applies to new equipment. Designing the imaging system around available access and clearance early in the project can make the final machine easier to assemble and maintain.

Selecting a 90 Degree Machine Vision Camera

The lens projects forward from the camera and may occupy significantly more space than expected. The system also needs room for cables, connectors, mounting hardware and lighting. Working distance creates another fixed requirement because the lens must be positioned at the correct distance from the object.

Serviceability should also be considered. A camera that fits perfectly during assembly may become inconvenient if connectors cannot be reached or the lens cannot be adjusted after surrounding machine panels are installed.

For compact equipment, it is therefore useful to consider both installation space and access space. A well-integrated camera should fit the machine while still allowing practical setup, adjustment and maintenance.

A right angle camera is the more suitable choice when its mechanical format solves a genuine installation constraint.

A standard industrial camera remains an effective option where sufficient mounting space is available. Choosing a conventional housing can keep the system straightforward when there is no need to change the direction of the camera body.

It was easy to integrate and USB3 Vision interface allowed our software team to get started quickly. The sales guy was very helpful with selecting the hardware for us. We are happy that we selected the USB3 board-level camera instead of a Mipi embedded vision camera as we didn't require now the additional driver development.

After installation on our laboratory we were surprised again of the high quality of the photos and the versatility of this system. (options in Galaxy viewer and integration in Python. Recently we had an issue with the software and the customer support was able to give us the relevant information to fix it within one day. The next time we need a camera we will not be looking to other suppliers but contact GeT Cameras immediately.

The SDK looks like the SDK from Basler so I felt directly comfortable with it. The camera and lens was a perfect match and now I'm able to read small DMC codes on large products with just a single camera.
