How a Global Shutter Camera Preserves Geometry

A global shutter camera exposes the sensor rows within the same time interval, reducing the skew that sequential row exposure can create.

This matters when an algorithm relies on the position, angle or shape of a moving feature. Examples include measuring a hole, locating a component for a robot, checking packaging orientation or detecting the edge of a rotating part.

Global shutter reduces this distortion, but it does not guarantee sharpness. The target can still move during exposure, so exposure time and lighting must be specified alongside shutter type.

Exposure Time, Frame Rate and Trigger Rate Are Different

Exposure time, frame rate and trigger rate must be considered separately because each controls a different part of acquisition.

Exposure time determines how long light is collected and how far the target can move within one image. Frame rate describes how many images the camera can deliver. Trigger rate describes how often the machine requests an image.

A high-frame-rate camera can still produce blur if exposure is too long. Calculate image frequency from the machine cycle, determine exposure from permitted movement and confirm that the data path can process the required output.

Select the Sensor Output and Optics Together

Select monochrome, colour or specialist sensor output according to the information required for the inspection decision.

Monochrome cameras suit edges, shape, code reading and measurement. Colour cameras are appropriate when colour identifies a defect, label or component. Specialist wavelengths require compatible cameras, lenses, illumination and filters.

The lens must cover the sensor and resolve the smallest feature across the field of view. Use the machine vision lens calculator, then compare suitable machine vision lenses.

Provide Enough Light for the Required Exposure

Machine vision lighting must create sufficient contrast within the exposure time needed to control movement.

Shorter exposure collects less light, so the system may require greater intensity, a suitable aperture, a more sensitive sensor or a synchronised strobe. Continuous illumination can suit stable processes, while strobed lighting can concentrate light around the trigger event.

Backlighting can define an outer edge, diffuse light can manage reflections and directional light can reveal texture. Review industrial machine vision lighting before finalising the camera.

When a Rolling Shutter Camera May Be Sufficient

A rolling shutter camera may be sufficient when the scene is stationary or movement cannot create a relevant geometric error.

Examples include inspection after a product has stopped, laboratory imaging and tasks where resolution or sensitivity takes priority over motion geometry. Global shutter should solve a defined movement or synchronisation requirement rather than be treated as an automatic upgrade.

After installation on our laboratory we were surprised again of the high quality of the photos and the versatility of this system. (options in Galaxy viewer and integration in Python. Recently we had an issue with the software and the customer support was able to give us the relevant information to fix it within one day. The next time we need a camera we will not be looking to other suppliers but contact GeT Cameras immediately.

The SDK looks like the SDK from Basler so I felt directly comfortable with it. The camera and lens was a perfect match and now I'm able to read small DMC codes on large products with just a single camera.

I was using cameras from a German competitor, but I was not happy with the support. They contacted me and we where able to select a camera with the same sensor.
