What Is a Structured Light Camera?

A structured light camera is a 3D imaging device that projects a known light pattern onto a target. One or more sensors capture the pattern from a calibrated viewing position, and the system calculates depth from the way the pattern shifts across the surface.

Unlike a conventional industrial camera, it does not only record brightness, colour and contrast. It also provides information about distance and physical geometry.

The camera can therefore help an automated system distinguish between objects that appear similar in a flat image but have different heights, shapes or positions.

Since the projected pattern creates additional visual features, structured light can also be useful for objects with plain or low-texture surfaces. These targets may provide too few natural reference points for passive 3D methods.

From Projected Light to 3D Measurements

Structured light is an active form of 3D imaging. The 3D camera system does not simply observe the available light within a scene. It projects a carefully defined pattern onto the target and records how that pattern appears across the object.

The projected design may contain dots, stripes, lines or another coded arrangement. Flat areas, raised features, curved surfaces and objects at different distances alter the position and appearance of the pattern. Because the geometry between the projector and sensor is calibrated, these changes can be converted into depth measurements.

The camera combines the measurements to create a depth image, point cloud or other three-dimensional representation of the visible scene.

This allows connected software to assess where an object is located, how it is orientated and how its surface changes across the measurement area.

How Does a Structured Light Sensor Camera Work?

The imaging process starts with the projector illuminating the target. The pattern is sent towards the object from a known position, while the imaging sensor observes it from a different angle.

The camera software identifies the projected features and compares their captured positions with the calibrated reference. The displacement of each feature is then used to calculate its distance from the camera.

These depth values are brought together to create a three-dimensional dataset. Depending on the model and software, this may be available as a depth map, XYZ point cloud, infrared image, colour image or combined RGB-D output.

The exact calculation method can differ between products. Some systems use projector-camera triangulation, while others use an active stereo arrangement. In each case, the projected pattern provides the reference needed to reconstruct the scene.

Where Structured Light Adds Value

Structured light is particularly useful when an application depends on geometry rather than only surface appearance. It can reveal whether an object is raised, recessed, distorted, correctly positioned or occupying a particular volume.

This makes the technology relevant to a range of UK industrial and technical environments.

Automated Picking and Robot Guidance

Structured light cameras provide the depth data robots need to locate parts, determine their orientation and calculate suitable gripping positions.

Typical applications include bin picking, machine tending, depalletising, pick-and-place automation, packaging and assembly.

Inspection Based on Shape and Height

Structured light can detect geometric differences that may not be visible through colour or contrast alone, including warpage, incorrect alignment and dimensional variation.

The captured depth data can be used to inspect height, profile, flatness, surface shape and assembly completeness.

Parcel and Material Handling

In warehouses and distribution centres, structured light cameras can support parcel dimensioning, volume estimation, sorting, object separation and robotic handling.

Conveyor speed, exposure time and synchronisation should be considered when objects move through the measurement area.

Research, Development and OEM Equipment

Structured light cameras can be integrated into laboratory systems, specialist machinery, automated test equipment, medical technology and new product designs.

Software access, processing requirements, mounting, power, thermal conditions and available installation space should be reviewed during development.

Start With the Measurement Problem

Camera selection should begin with the required measurement result rather than resolution or maximum range alone.

Capture Volume

Define the complete three-dimensional area that must be measured, including the width, height and nearest and furthest visible surfaces.

The camera must provide usable depth data across the entire working area, not only at its maximum stated distance.

Required Detail

Establish the smallest feature, height difference or positional change the system needs to detect.

Accuracy and repeatability should be evaluated at the intended working distance and field of view.

Object Behaviour

Consider whether the target is stationary, travelling on a conveyor or viewed from a camera mounted on a moving robot.

Faster applications may require shorter exposure, rapid acquisition, external triggering or synchronisation.

Material and Finish

Matte surfaces are generally easier to capture than polished, transparent, very dark or strongly curved objects.

Representative samples should be tested whenever the material may affect pattern visibility.

Integration Environment

The camera must fit the mechanical, electrical and software architecture of the complete system.

Review the interface, cable length, mounting position, housing, processing resources, SDK support and required data output.

Reflective and Glossy Targets

Glossy surfaces can redirect the projected pattern and produce gaps, false points or unstable measurements. Polarised structured light cameras may reduce certain reflection-related effects on coated, polished and reflective materials.

Performance still depends on the material, surface angle, curvature, camera position and surrounding illumination. Testing the actual object under realistic conditions remains the most reliable approach.

Structured Light in Changing Lighting Conditions

The projected pattern must remain visible to the camera for reliable depth calculation. Strong ambient illumination can reduce its contrast and make the projected features more difficult to detect.

This is important in UK facilities where an imaging station may be positioned near windows, loading bays, skylights or frequently opened doors. Light levels can change throughout the day and across different seasons.

Testing only under controlled development conditions may therefore provide an incomplete picture of performance. The camera should also be assessed under the brightest and most variable lighting expected in the final installation.

Mechanical shielding, revised camera positioning or control of the surrounding illumination may improve consistency.

Choosing Between USB and Ethernet

USB structured light cameras can be practical when the camera and host computer are installed close together. They are often considered for compact inspection stations, laboratories, development systems, prototypes and equipment with an integrated computer.

Ethernet cameras offer more flexibility where longer cable routes are required or the camera must be positioned farther from the processing system. They may also fit more naturally into larger machines and established industrial networks.

The interface should be chosen as part of the full system design. Cable distance, bandwidth, power, housing, installation environment and software support all contribute to the decision.

USB or Ethernet connectivity does not by itself determine the quality of the 3D measurement.

It was easy to integrate and USB3 Vision interface allowed our software team to get started quickly. The sales guy was very helpful with selecting the hardware for us. We are happy that we selected the USB3 board-level camera instead of a Mipi embedded vision camera as we didn't require now the additional driver development.

Recently we purchased a camera with lens, and LED lights. We are not experienced with machine vision but the installation worked out fine. After installation on our laboratory we were surprised again of the high quality of the photos and the versatility of this system. (options in Galaxy viewer and integration in Python. Recently we had an issue with the software and the customer support was able to give us the relevant information to fix it within one day. The next time we need a camera we will not be looking to other suppliers but contact GeT Cameras immediately.

I was just surprised by the inhouse knowledge of get cameras about machine vision. Never expected this from a webshop. The image an built quality of the camera is also great. Unfortunately they don't offer a loan service, but I decided to try it. I had the cameras in house within 2 weeks and connection was easy. The SDK looks like the SDK from Basler so I felt directly comfortable with it. The camera and lens was a perfect match and now I'm able to read small DMC codes on large products with just a single camera.

    I was using cameras from a German competitor, but I was not happy with the support. They contacted me and we where able to select a camera with the same sensor.
