IR-Corrected Lenses for Day/Night and NIR Imaging
IR-corrected lenses are used when an imaging system needs to remain focused as illumination changes between visible and near-infrared (NIR) light. They are particularly relevant to day/night machine vision, ANPR and other applications where the same camera operates under different lighting conditions.

When Does an IR-Corrected Lens Become Important?
A common sign that IR correction may be required is a camera that produces a sharp image under visible light but becomes softer when NIR illumination is introduced.
This happens because visible and near-infrared wavelengths do not necessarily reach their sharpest focus at exactly the same position.
If your system:
- switches between daylight and NIR illumination;
- operates continuously during the day and at night;
- uses NIR lighting for ANPR or monitoring; or
- needs consistent focus without manual adjustment,
an IR-corrected lens may be more suitable than a standard lens.
Why Can Focus Change Under NIR Illumination?
Different wavelengths of light are refracted differently as they pass through an optical system.
With a standard lens, a camera focused under visible light can therefore produce a softer image when infrared illumination is introduced. An IR-corrected optical design reduces this difference so that the required visible and NIR wavelengths focus closer to the same image plane.
The result can be:
- More stable focus as illumination changes
- Less need to refocus between daytime and night-time operation
- More repeatable imaging in automated systems
- Greater consistency when visible and NIR lighting are both used

Selecting an IR-Corrected Lens for ANPR and Machine Vision
Once IR correction is required, the lens still needs to match the rest of the imaging setup.
Consider:
Sensor format: The lens image circle should cover the camera sensor.
Camera resolution: Select an optical resolution appropriate for the camera.
Focal length: Choose according to working distance and required field of view.
NIR wavelength: Confirm that the selected lens is suitable for the illumination used.
Depth of field: Consider how much of the scene must remain acceptably sharp.
Installation conditions: Account for available space and the required camera position.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition
ANPR systems often operate across bright daylight, artificial lighting and NIR illumination. IR correction can help maintain image sharpness when the illumination changes after dark.
Day/Night Monitoring
Cameras used around the clock may switch from ambient visible light to dedicated NIR lighting. Maintaining focus through this transition can reduce the need for mechanical or manual adjustment.
Automated Inspection
Inspection systems may use different illumination wavelengths to highlight specific surface or material characteristics. Stable focus helps maintain repeatable image acquisition.
OCR & Code Reading
Small text, labels and codes depend on sufficient image clarity. An IR-corrected lens can be useful when both visible and NIR lighting are used within the reading process.

Our main priorities were compact dimensions and keeping the required software development to a minimum. We selected a VEN-161 boardlevel camera. It was easy to integrate and USB3 Vision interface allowed our software team to get started quickly. The sales guy was very helpful with selecting the hardware for us. We are happy that we selected the USB3 board-level camera instead of a Mipi embedded vision camera as we didn't require now the additional driver development.

Recently we purchased a camera with lens, and LED lights. We are not experienced with machine vision but the installation worked out fine. After installation on our laboratory we were surprised again of the high quality of the photos and the versatility of this system. (options in Galaxy viewer and integration in Python. Recently we had an issue with the software and the customer support was able to give us the relevant information to fix it within one day. The next time we need a camera we will not be looking to other suppliers but contact GeT Cameras immediately.

I was just surprised by the inhouse knowledge of get cameras about machine vision. Never expected this from a webshop. The image an built quality of the camera is also great. The camera feels and operates the same as our Basler cameras.

In the beginning I was sceptic because of the low prices, but support by email was great. They advise a lens and provided additional technical information. Unfortunately they don't offer a loan service, but I decided to try it. I had the cameras in house within 2 weeks and connection was easy. The SDK looks like the SDK from Basler so I felt directly comfortable with it. The camera and lens was a perfect match and now I'm able to read small DMC codes on large products with just a single camera.
