Area Scan Camera Range and Specifications
The VA Imaging UK collection covers a broad range of industrial imaging requirements. Current filters include resolutions up to 246 megapixels, listed frame rates up to 1,938 frames per second, sensor formats from compact fractional-inch sensors to large-format models, and multiple visible and non-visible imaging options. Actual performance depends on the selected camera, interface, bit depth, region of interest and acquisition settings.
Rather than selecting the highest available specification, choose a camera that provides enough detail and speed for the application while remaining compatible with the lens, lighting, interface and processing platform.
What Does an Area Scan Camera Do?
An area scan camera records the entire field of view as a rectangular image instead of building the image one line at a time. This complete spatial view allows machine vision software to inspect features, measure dimensions, locate objects, read text or codes and make pass-or-fail decisions.
A working imaging system normally includes:
- Lighting that creates contrast around the required feature
- A lens that forms the image on the sensor
- A two-dimensional sensor that captures the frame
- An industrial interface that transfers the image
- Software that analyses the data and produces a result
Camera selection should therefore be considered alongside optics, lighting, triggering, cabling and software.
How to Choose an Industrial Area Scan Camera
Choosing an industrial area scan camera begins with the required field of view, smallest feature and object movement. These values determine the minimum resolution, suitable shutter technology, exposure time and frame rate.
Also consider:
- Working distance
- Available mounting space
- Cable length
- Number of cameras
- Host-computer performance
- Required trigger and I/O functions
- Operating system and SDK compatibility
- Temperature, vibration, dust or enclosure requirements
Calculate the Required Resolution
Calculate resolution from the width of the field of view and the smallest object-space detail that must be represented.
Required horizontal pixels =
Field-of-view width ÷ Required object-space resolution
For example, a 200 mm-wide field of view sampled at 0.2 mm per pixel requires at least 1,000 horizontal pixels. A practical margin should then be added for part-position variation, contrast, calibration and reliable image processing.
Higher resolution can reveal smaller features, but it also increases:
- Image data
- Processing load
- Storage requirements
- Lens-performance requirements
- Exposure and lighting demands
Choose the minimum resolution that reliably solves the inspection task and validate it with representative samples.
Match the Shutter to Object Movement
A global shutter area scan camera is normally preferred when the target moves during exposure, when a robot is in motion or when accurate geometry is required. The sensor rows are exposed over the same interval, reducing the shape distortion associated with rolling-shutter readout.
A rolling shutter area scan camera can be suitable for stationary components, laboratory imaging and slower processes where movement during acquisition is negligible.
Neither shutter type removes motion blur automatically. Exposure must still be short enough for the object speed. Reducing exposure may require stronger illumination, strobed lighting, a wider aperture or increased sensor gain.
Learn more in the global shutter versus rolling shutter guide.
Area Scan Camera Interface Comparison
The best interface depends on image bandwidth, cable routing, host hardware and the required level of system complexity.
| Interface | Best Suited To | Main Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| USB3 Vision | Compact systems with a nearby computer | Cable length and USB controller capacity |
| GigE Vision | Distributed machines and longer cable routes | Network configuration and available bandwidth |
| 2.5GigE, 5GigE and 10GigE | Higher-resolution or faster acquisition | Network card, cabling and processing throughput |
| CoaXPress | Very high-speed or deterministic imaging | Frame grabber requirement and total system cost |
A simplified raw-data estimate is:
Image width × image height × bits per pixel × frames per second
Allow additional capacity for protocol overhead, multiple cameras, image conversion, processing and storage. A smaller region of interest can reduce transmitted data and may allow a higher acquisition rate.
Advantages and Limitations of Area Scan Cameras
Area scan cameras are particularly effective when a discrete object or bounded scene fits within one field of view.
Main Advantages
- Complete two-dimensional context in every frame
- Straightforward triggering for discrete products
- Broad choice of resolutions, sensors and interfaces
- Suitable for inspection, measurement, OCR and robotics
- Compatible with many machine vision lenses and lighting arrangements
- Easier integration than line scan for many general applications
Best Suited For
- Discrete products that can be captured in one or more frames
- Static, indexed or carefully controlled moving objects
- Inspection tasks requiring a complete two-dimensional image
- Measurement, OCR, identification and robot-guidance systems
- Applications requiring flexible camera, lens and lighting options
Potential Limitations and Solutions
| Limitation | Possible Solution |
|---|---|
| The complete product does not fit within one frame | Use a higher-resolution camera, multiple views or line scan imaging. |
| Moving products appear blurred | Reduce the exposure time and increase or strobe the lighting. |
| Rolling-shutter distortion affects geometry | Select an area scan camera with a global shutter. |
| A curved surface varies in focus or perspective | Improve product positioning, use specialist optics or consider line scan imaging. |
| Image data exceeds the system bandwidth | Use a region of interest, reduce the frame rate or bit depth, or select a faster camera interface. |
| The lens does not cover the sensor | Select a lens with the correct image circle and sufficient resolving performance. |
Area Scan Camera vs Line Scan Camera
An area scan camera captures a complete frame, while a line scan camera builds an image from successive lines as the product or camera moves.
| Selection Factor | Area Scan Camera | Line Scan Camera |
|---|---|---|
| Image acquisition | Complete two-dimensional frame | Successive image lines |
| Typical object | Discrete component or bounded scene | Continuous, elongated or rotating product |
| Movement | Static, indexed or controlled | Predictable continuous movement |
| Synchronisation | Trigger and exposure control | Line triggering, often with encoder feedback |
| Field coverage | Must fit within one or more frames | Can build images of very long surfaces |

Common Area Scan Camera Selection Mistakes
The most common errors occur when one camera specification is considered without the complete imaging system.
Avoid:
- Choosing a camera solely by megapixel count
- Failing to calculate the smallest required feature
- Using rolling shutter where motion creates unacceptable distortion
- Underestimating the illumination needed for short exposure
- Selecting an interface without calculating image bandwidth
- Using a lens that does not cover or resolve the sensor
- Ignoring trigger timing and strobe compatibility
- Overlooking SDK, driver or operating-system requirements
- Failing to consider enclosure, vibration or cable-routing requirements
Testing with representative products under realistic production conditions can identify these problems before the system is commissioned.
Practical Area Scan Camera Applications in the UK
Area scan cameras support a wide range of UK manufacturing, automation, research and logistics projects.
Packaging and label inspection
A packaging line may use a global shutter camera with short exposure to minimise movement-related distortion. Diffuse lighting can reduce reflections from glossy labels, while sufficient resolution allows OCR, barcode and Data Matrix verification.
Precision component measurement
A monochrome area scan camera can be paired with calibrated optics and stable backlighting to create defined component edges. For demanding dimensional measurements, a telecentric lens may reduce perspective-related measurement variation.
Robotic picking and guidance
An area scan camera can capture the complete picking area in one frame, allowing software to calculate object position and orientation. The interface, exposure and processing time must fit within the robot’s required cycle time.
Electronics inspection
Higher-resolution models can be used to examine connectors, components, solder features or printed markings. Lens quality and carefully controlled illumination are essential because increasing camera resolution alone does not guarantee usable detail.
Food and pharmaceutical packaging
Area scan cameras can verify product presence, labels, print, seals and packaging condition. The camera and lighting arrangement should be designed around the surface material, line speed and required defect contrast.
Specialist Area Scan Imaging
Some industrial applications require information outside conventional colour or monochrome visible-light imaging.
Available specialist camera types in the current collection include:
- Monochrome polarisation cameras for analysing glare and surface behaviour
- NIR-sensitive cameras for near-infrared inspection
- UV cameras for ultraviolet-sensitive imaging
- SWIR cameras for applications where short-wave infrared contrast reveals material differences not visible to standard sensors
Specialist imaging requires compatible lenses, lighting and optical filters. Confirm the complete spectral response of every component before selecting the system. The availability of polarisation, UV, NIR and SWIR filtering is shown in the current collection.

We initially explored several embedded vision camera and USB3 camera options for our application. Our main priorities were compact dimensions and keeping the required software development to a minimum. We selected a VEN-161 boardlevel camera. It was easy to integrate and USB3 Vision interface allowed our software team to get started quickly. The sales guy was very helpful with selecting the hardware for us. We are happy that we selected the USB3 board-level camera instead of a Mipi embedded vision camera as we didn't require now the additional driver development.
