Polarizing lens filters are used in machine vision to control reflections, improve contrast, and reveal surface details that are hidden under standard illumination.
These lens filters are particularly effective when imaging reflective materials such as metal, glass, or plastic, where glare and hotspots can obscure critical features.
The filters are constructed from dichroic polymer sheets laminated between layers of protective optical glass.
The polarization axis can be adjusted by rotating the front ring and locked in place with a set screw to maintain alignment during operation.
This design ensures optical stability, mechanical durability and straightforward integration into industrial imaging systems.
Understanding Polarization in Machine Vision
Light emitted by LEDs or other illumination sources is typically unpolarized, meaning its electric field oscillates in all directions. A polarizing filter restricts this light to a single plane of vibration, allowing only light aligned with its polarization axis to pass.
When unpolarized light reflects from a surface, part of it becomes polarized parallel to that surface. Machine vision systems can use this property to suppress unwanted reflections and improve image quality.
Polarization techniques can:
- Reduce glare from shiny or curved surfaces
- Increase contrast and surface visibility
- Reveal fine scratches and imperfections
- Distinguish materials by their polarization behavior

Polarization Performance and Transmission Characteristics
The linear polarizer’s performance was evaluated to determine its transmission efficiency and polarization behavior under different configurations. The data below summarize measured transmission, polarization efficiency, and colorimetric parameters for single, parallel, and crossed polarizer setups. These results illustrate how transmission decreases as polarization alignment shifts from single to crossed orientation, confirming the filter’s strong extinction ratio and reliable optical stability across the visible spectrum.

The graph shows the transmission characteristics of a linear polarizing filter across 300–800 nm. The blue, green, and red curves represent single, parallel, and crossed polarizer configurations.
In the single configuration, the filter achieves about 40% transmission with >99% polarization efficiency.
When two filters are aligned in parallel, transmission is roughly 33%, and when set to a crossed orientation, transmission is nearly zero (<0.3%).
These measurements demonstrate a high extinction ratio and consistent optical behavior across the visible spectrum, confirming suitability for glare suppression, contrast enhancement, and cross-polarization imaging.
Cross Polarization for Reflection Suppression
Cross polarization uses two polarizers at right angles:
· A polarizing filter sheet on the light source to polarize illumination
· A polarizing lens filter on the camera, oriented 90° relative to the source
This arrangement blocks directly reflected light while allowing diffuse, depolarized light from the object to reach the sensor.
The result is an image with minimal glare, improved contrast, and greater visibility of fine surface details.
Cross polarization is especially useful in:
· Surface inspection of reflective or transparent parts
· Print and label verification
· Coated or curved material analysis
· Applications requiring stable results under variable lighting
Note: Cross-polarization reduces total light intensity, often requiring longer exposure times or stronger illumination.

System Integration and Options for polarization
For complete polarization control, both the illumination and lens should use polarizing components.
Filter sheets can be cut to size and placed on ring or bar lights for polarized illumination.
These polarizing filters are optimized for the 400–780 nm spectral range, ensuring consistent performance across common visible-light imaging applications.

GeT Cameras in Germany made some photo's of our products to show the performance of their cameras and they looked perfect. Recently we purchased a camera with lens, and LED lights. Recently we purchased a camera with lens, and LED lights. We are not experienced with machine vision but the installation worked out fine. After installation on our laboratory we were surprised again of the high quality of the photos and the versatility of this system. (options in Galaxy viewer and integration in Python. Recently we had an issue with the software and the customer support was able to give us the relevant information to fix it within one day. The next time we need a camera we will not be looking to other suppliers but contact GeT Cameras immediately.

For a new product development there was a lot of price pressure. We needed a cheap camera. I called them and Caspar was providing great support. He even advised a cheaper camera than I had in mind. I was just surprised by the inhouse knowledge of get cameras about machine vision. Never expected this from a webshop. The image an built quality of the camera is also great. The camera feels and operates the same as our Basler cameras.

In the beginning I was sceptic because of the low prices, but support by email was great. They advise a lens and provided additional technical information. Unfortunately they don't offer a loan service, but I decided to try it. I had the cameras in house within 2 weeks and connection was easy. The SDK looks like the SDK from Basler so I felt directly comfortable with it. The camera and lens was a perfect match and now I'm able to read small DMC codes on large products with just a single camera.
