5GigE and 10GigE cameras transfer image data over Ethernet and use GigE Vision with GenICam-based camera control. These standards provide consistent methods for detecting compatible cameras, accessing camera settings and acquiring images through supported software.

The interface rate does not guarantee a particular camera frame rate. Sensor readout, exposure time, resolution, pixel format, network configuration and computer performance also affect the final acquisition speed.

How to Choose Between 5GigE and 10GigE Cameras

Choose between 5GigE and 10GigE cameras by calculating how much image data the application must transfer.

Choose a 5GigE camera when standard GigE no longer provides enough bandwidth but the expected image stream remains within the capacity of a 5GbE connection. This may apply when increasing resolution, capturing more images per second or using image formats with more bits per pixel.

Applications with lower bandwidth requirements may be better served by standard GigE and 2.5GigE cameras.
Choose a 10GigE camera when the system combines particularly high resolution, fast acquisition or increased image bit depth. It can also be appropriate when several data-intensive cameras must operate within the same installation.

Common reasons to consider 10GigE include:

  • Large-format image sensors
  • High-resolution inspection at production speed
  • Fast motion analysis
  • Scientific image acquisition
  • 10-bit or 12-bit image formats
  • Multi-camera systems with a high combined data load

A 10GigE connection does not automatically make every camera twice as fast as a 5GigE model. The image sensor, exposure time, image format and host computer must also support the required acquisition rate.

How Much Bandwidth Does a 5GigE or 10GigE Camera Need?

The required camera bandwidth depends mainly on resolution, frame rate, image bit depth and the number of cameras in the system.

A simplified estimate of raw image data can be calculated using:

Number of pixels × frames per second × bits per pixel ÷ 8

For example:

  • A 5-megapixel monochrome stream at 60 fps and 8 bits per pixel produces approximately 300 MB/s.
  • A 12-megapixel stream using the same settings produces approximately 720 MB/s.

These are illustrative calculations, not specifications from individual VA Imaging cameras. Actual bandwidth also depends on exact sensor resolution, pixel format, pixel packing, region of interest, packet settings and network overhead.

The theoretical line rate of 5GigE is 625 MB/s. The second example would therefore exceed the 5GigE line rate before practical overhead is considered. It would normally require 10GigE or a reduction in resolution, frame rate or active image area.

For systems with multiple cameras, perform the calculation for every active image stream and combine the results.

Upgrading from GigE to 5GigE or 10GigE in Canada

Upgrading from standard GigE normally requires a faster host interface and may also require changes to the cable, power connection and computer hardware.

GigE Vision and GenICam help retain a familiar camera-control structure when moving between Ethernet camera interfaces. However, compatibility should still be tested with the selected camera, SDK and machine vision software.

Before upgrading, check whether the existing system can retain:

  • GigE Vision acquisition software
  • Camera-control code
  • Trigger wiring
  • Ethernet cables
  • Lens and camera mounting
  • Computer and PCIe hardware
  • Power and I/O connections

Existing software or hardware should not be assumed to support full 5GigE or 10GigE performance simply because it works with standard GigE.

A practical upgrade usually begins with the network interface. The cable, power connection and host-computer capacity can then be checked against the requirements of the selected camera.

Building a Reliable 5GigE or 10GigE Camera System

A reliable 5GigE or 10GigE system requires compatible camera, network, power, optical, lighting and software components.

A conventional frame grabber is not always required for GigE Vision. The computer does, however, need a compatible 5GbE or 10GbE interface capable of receiving the expected image stream.

A dedicated 5GigE or 10GigE interface card is recommended for reliable continuous acquisition.
The host computer should also provide adequate:

  • PCIe bandwidth
  • Working memory
  • Processor or GPU capacity
  • Storage performance
  • Cooling for sustained acquisition

Reliable high-speed imaging depends on the entire data path rather than the camera interface alone. Test the complete system at the required continuous data rate when dropped images or timing variation cannot be accepted.

Connecting Multiple 5GigE and 10GigE Cameras

Multiple 5GigE or 10GigE cameras can be connected through a multi-port interface card or a suitable high-speed Ethernet switch.

A basic single-camera system uses this connection:

Camera → Ethernet cable → interface card → computer → camera software

A multi-camera system may use:

Cameras → multi-port interface card or Ethernet switch → host interface → computer

When several cameras operate together, the network ports, switch, PCIe connection, memory, storage and processing system must support the combined data rate of every active stream.

Applications using several viewpoints may also require the cameras to capture at the same moment. Depending on the selected model, synchronization may be controlled through:

  • Hardware trigger signals
  • Action commands
  • Precision Time Protocol
  • Other camera-specific timing functions

Support for these functions varies between camera models. Confirm the available synchronization method in the individual product specifications before designing the system.

Multi-camera synchronization can be particularly relevant for:

  • 3D or volumetric imaging
  • Motion analysis
  • Synchronized measurement
  • Multiple viewing angles
  • Coordinated robot or machine movement
  • High-speed event capture

10GigE Cables, Camera Power and Software

The current VA Imaging 10GigE range requires compatible high-speed cabling, separate camera power and supported acquisition software.

VA Imaging’s compatible 10GigE cables are designed to support maximum bandwidth over distances of up to 50 metres. Cable lengths below 30 metres are recommended for optimal performance.

Installation conditions, shielding, connector type and cable quality must also be considered. Moving machinery may require a cable designed for repeated flexing or drag-chain use.

The current VA Imaging 10GigE camera series does not support Power over Ethernet. A separate power and I/O cable is required. Confirm the connection and power requirements on the individual product page before ordering.

What to Compare Before Choosing a High-Speed Ethernet Camera

Compare the camera’s resolution, frame rate, shutter, sensor and image output before selecting 5GigE or 10GigE.

Resolution and field of view: Higher resolution can reveal smaller details or cover a larger inspection area, but it also increases the amount of data created by every image.

Frame rate and object movement: The camera must capture enough images within the available inspection time. Moving objects may also require a short exposure to prevent motion blur.

Global or rolling shutter: A global shutter captures the full image at one moment and is generally preferred for moving products. A rolling shutter can be suitable for stationary objects or processes with limited movement.

Colour or monochrome: Monochrome cameras are commonly selected for measurement, defect detection and applications requiring high sensitivity. Colour cameras are useful when colour differences form part of the inspection.

Image bit depth: Higher bit depths provide more intensity levels but also increase the amount of data that must be transferred and processed.

Sensor size and lens: The sensor dimensions, working distance, field of view and smallest relevant feature determine the required lens.

Lighting and exposure: Fast image acquisition often requires brighter or strobed lighting because less light reaches the sensor during shorter exposures.

A GigE camera is an industrial camera that transfers uncompressed image data over a Gigabit Ethernet connection for machine vision applications. The SDK looks like the SDK from Basler so I felt directly comfortable with it. The camera and lens was a perfect match and now I'm able to read small DMC codes on large products with just a single camera.

    I was using cameras from a German competitor, but I was not happy with the support. They contacted me and we where able to select a camera with the same sensor. It took me half a day to implement their SDK into my software so it was relative easy.
