A 90 degree industrial camera can help turn the imaging system into a more clearly defined part of the machine design.

In many automation projects, the camera is only one element within a larger assembly. The lens establishes the optical view, the lighting creates the required contrast, the mounting determines alignment and the cables connect the camera to the control system.

Treating these components as one imaging module can simplify the design process. Instead of finding space for each component independently, engineers can define the complete camera position, optical path and connection layout early in the project.

The right-angle camera format provides another mechanical option for creating that module when a traditional straight camera arrangement is not suitable.

Why Camera Geometry Matters in Machine Design

Camera geometry matters because two cameras with similar imaging specifications can require very different amounts of installation space.

The movement of the target then influences frame rate, exposure and shutter choice. A global shutter is commonly considered when motion during image acquisition could create unwanted geometric distortion. A rolling shutter may be suitable when the object remains stationary or the movement does not interfere with the inspection.

Colour should only be selected when colour information contributes to the decision being made by the vision system. For inspections based primarily on edges, dimensions, position or contrast, monochrome imaging may be more appropriate.

Once these imaging requirements are understood, the right-angle housing can be evaluated as the mechanical format for the selected solution.

Create a Repeatable Camera and Lens Configuration

A repeatable machine vision design depends on keeping the relationship between the camera, lens and inspected object clearly defined.

Working distance and field of view determine the optical geometry of the system. The lens must also match the sensor format and provide the required image area from the available camera position.

This becomes especially important when the same machine or vision concept will be built more than once. A clearly documented combination of camera position, lens, working distance and illumination can make subsequent machine builds easier to reproduce.

The physical dimensions of the lens should be checked at the same time as the camera. A compact camera housing provides limited benefit if the selected optics require more space than the machine can accommodate.

It was easy to integrate and USB3 Vision interface allowed our software team to get started quickly. The sales guy was very helpful with selecting the hardware for us. We are happy that we selected the USB3 board-level camera instead of a Mipi embedded vision camera as we didn't require now the additional driver development.

After installation on our laboratory we were surprised again of the high quality of the photos and the versatility of this system. (options in Galaxy viewer and integration in Python. Recently we had an issue with the software and the customer support was able to give us the relevant information to fix it within one day. The next time we need a camera we will not be looking to other suppliers but contact GeT Cameras immediately.

Unfortunately they don't offer a loan service, but I decided to try it. I had the cameras in house within 2 weeks and connection was easy. The SDK looks like the SDK from Basler so I felt directly comfortable with it. The camera and lens was a perfect match and now I'm able to read small DMC codes on large products with just a single camera.

    I was using cameras from a German competitor, but I was not happy with the support. They contacted me and we where able to select a camera with the same sensor.
