Where Global Shutter Technology Adds Value

Global shutter technology adds value when consistent geometry is required across a moving scene.

Because the sensor rows share the same exposure interval, the target is not recorded at different positions from the top of the frame to the bottom. This supports repeatable feature positions and object shapes for robotic guidance, dimensional checks, orientation detection and synchronised inspection.

Typical uses include:

  • Inspecting products while a conveyor remains in motion
  • Capturing rotating components
  • Locating parts for pick-and-place systems
  • Reading codes on moving packaging
  • Measuring features that must retain consistent geometry
  • Acquiring images from cameras mounted on moving robots

The main benefit is not simply speed; it is consistent timing across the complete image.

Motion Distortion and Motion Blur Are Not the Same

Motion distortion and motion blur are separate problems and require different solutions.

Global shutter reduces distortion caused by sensor rows being exposed at different times. Motion blur occurs when the object changes position during the exposure itself. A global shutter camera can therefore create an image with correct geometry but blurred edges when the exposure is too long.

To minimise both effects, evaluate object speed, permitted movement, magnification and exposure time together. Shortening exposure reduces collected light, so stronger illumination, a suitable aperture, a sensitive sensor or synchronised strobe lighting may be needed.

Frame rate determines how often images are captured. It does not determine how much movement occurs within each exposure. A camera with a high maximum frame rate can still produce blurred images when exposure time is not configured for the object speed.

Balance Resolution and Data in a Global Shutter Camera

Select the interface according to the physical layout and data path of the complete vision system.

USB3 Vision is often practical for a camera positioned close to its host with a direct connection. GigE Vision can suit network-based layouts and longer camera-to-computer routes. Higher-bandwidth Ethernet can support larger image streams, while CoaXPress is relevant when compatible frame-grabber hardware is planned.

Compare more than nominal bandwidth. Check:

  • Cable routing
  • Available host connections
  • Power arrangement
  • Number of cameras
  • Trigger connections
  • Required image data
  • Planned system expansion

A high-performance camera may still be unsuitable when its interface complicates the machine architecture. Plan the Lens, Lighting and Exposure Together

Plan the lens, lighting and exposure as one optical system around the global shutter camera.

The lens must provide the required field of view, sensor coverage and depth of field. Opening the aperture increases the amount of light reaching the sensor, but it can reduce depth of field. It is therefore not always the complete answer to a short-exposure requirement.

Lighting must create usable contrast within the exposure window. Continuous illumination may suit stable processes, while strobed illumination can concentrate light around a trigger event.

The most effective lighting geometry also depends on the object:

  • Reflective metal may require diffuse or directional control
  • Transparent packaging may need backlighting or controlled reflections
  • Dark materials may require greater intensity
  • Low-contrast edges may benefit from backlighting
  • Printed or coloured details may require appropriate wavelengths

Compare machine vision lenses and machine vision lighting during camera selection rather than after the camera has already been chosen.

After installation on our laboratory we were surprised again of the high quality of the photos and the versatility of this system. (options in Galaxy viewer and integration in Python. Recently we had an issue with the software and the customer support was able to give us the relevant information to fix it within one day. The next time we need a camera we will not be looking to other suppliers but contact GeT Cameras immediately.
