IR-Corrected Lenses for Visible + NIR Imaging Systems

IR-corrected lenses are designed to reduce focal shift when an imaging system uses both visible and near-infrared (NIR) illumination. For reliable results, however, the lens also needs to be matched with the camera sensor, spectral response, lighting wavelength and imaging geometry.

VA Imaging offers 6 MP and 10 MP C-mount IR-corrected lenses for 1/1.8-inch and 1-inch sensor formats, with focal lengths from 6 mm to 75 mm depending on the model. We support machine vision projects across Canada with camera, lens and lighting selection.

Build a Compatible Visible + NIR Imaging System

The lens is only one part of a visible + NIR machine vision setup. Camera sensitivity, optical compatibility and illumination all influence the final image.

Matching these components together helps avoid choosing a lens that is optically suitable but incompatible with another part of the imaging system.

Start with the Camera's NIR Capability

Before selecting an IR-corrected lens, confirm that the camera itself can capture the required near-infrared wavelengths.

The camera sensor must have sufficient sensitivity in the required NIR range. Some colour imaging systems also use an IR-cut filter to prevent infrared light from reaching the sensor.

If an IR-cut filter blocks the wavelength used by your illumination, changing the lens alone will not make the system suitable for NIR imaging.

Match the IR-Corrected Lens to the Camera

Once the camera's spectral requirements are known, match the lens to the sensor and imaging geometry.

The VA Imaging range includes:

  • 6 MP C-mount options for 1/1.8-inch sensors
  • 10 MP C-mount options for 1-inch sensors
  • Focal lengths from 6 mm to 75 mm across the range
  • Optics intended for visible + near-infrared imaging

The selected model should cover the complete sensor and provide sufficient optical resolution for the camera.

How IR Correction Supports Consistent Focus

Visible and near-infrared wavelengths do not always focus at the same position when they pass through a standard optical system.

When illumination changes, this can cause an image that is sharp in one spectral range to appear softer in another.

IR-corrected optical designs are intended to reduce this difference in focal position, helping provide:

  • More consistent sharpness between visible and NIR imaging
  • Reduced need for refocusing
  • More repeatable image acquisition
  • Stable imaging when lighting conditions change

The exact result depends on the lens design and supported spectral range.

Match the Lighting to the Required Wavelength

The illumination should be selected together with the camera and lens.

For NIR imaging, consider both the wavelength of the light source and how that wavelength interacts with the target. The camera needs to detect it, while the lens needs to perform appropriately within the same spectral range.

Calculate Field of View and Focal Length

After camera and spectral compatibility have been established, determine the focal length.

You need three main values:

  • Sensor size
  • Working distance
  • Required field of view

It was easy to integrate and USB3 Vision interface allowed our software team to get started quickly. The sales guy was very helpful with selecting the hardware for us. We are happy that we selected the USB3 board-level camera instead of a Mipi embedded vision camera as we didn't require now the additional driver development.

After installation on our laboratory we were surprised again of the high quality of the photos and the versatility of this system. (options in Galaxy viewer and integration in Python. Recently we had an issue with the software and the customer support was able to give us the relevant information to fix it within one day. The next time we need a camera we will not be looking to other suppliers but contact GeT Cameras immediately.

The SDK looks like the SDK from Basler so I felt directly comfortable with it. The camera and lens was a perfect match and now I'm able to read small DMC codes on large products with just a single camera.
