Why Use a 90 Degree Industrial Camera?

A 90 degree industrial camera is primarily used when the mechanical layout makes a conventional camera difficult to install.

Machine vision cameras are often selected according to resolution, sensor size and frame rate. In compact equipment, however, physical dimensions can be equally important. A camera may meet every imaging requirement but still be unsuitable if there is insufficient clearance around the housing, lens or cables.

The right-angle design provides an alternative way to package the imaging system. It can be useful where machine height is restricted, where components are positioned closely together or where the camera must fit within an existing enclosure.

This makes the 90 degree format particularly relevant for compact automation systems and OEM products. The main benefit is mechanical flexibility rather than improved image quality. Image performance continues to depend on the sensor, optics, lighting and camera configuration.

Start With the Space Available in Your Machine

Choosing the right 90 degree camera starts with understanding where the complete imaging system needs to fit.

Instead of looking only at the dimensions of the camera body, consider the full installation. The lens adds length to the optical system, cables require clearance around the connectors and the lighting must still illuminate the inspection area correctly. The required working distance between the lens and object can also determine where the camera can realistically be installed.

This means two cameras with similar imaging specifications may behave very differently from a mechanical design perspective.

Before selecting a model, determine the available height, width and depth around the inspection position. Then consider the required field of view and working distance. From there, the appropriate sensor size, lens and camera specifications can be evaluated.

This fit-first approach helps reduce the risk of selecting a camera that works optically but becomes difficult to integrate once the complete system is assembled.

Selecting the Right 90 Degree Machine Vision Camera

The right 90 degree machine vision camera should satisfy both the imaging task and the physical limitations of the machine.

Resolution determines how much image detail is available across the field of view, while frame rate determines how frequently images can be captured. Sensor size influences lens selection and the optical configuration, and shutter technology becomes important when objects are moving.

The choice between monochrome and color should depend on the information required by the inspection. A monochrome camera can be appropriate for tasks based on edges, dimensions, shapes, positioning or contrast. A color camera becomes relevant when differences in color contribute directly to the inspection result.

The camera interface should also be considered as part of the installation. Data requirements matter, but so do cable length, cable routing and the host system used to acquire the images.

Finally, lens selection should not be treated separately from the camera. Sensor size, focal length, field of view and working distance all influence the final optical setup.

Where Are Right Angle Industrial Cameras Used?

Right angle industrial cameras are particularly useful when the imaging position is accessible but the surrounding machine space is limited.

In automated inspection equipment, the camera may need to sit close to a conveyor, actuator or machine frame. In electronics inspection, mechanical components around the PCB can limit how the camera is positioned. An OEM manufacturer may need to integrate the imaging system entirely inside an existing enclosure.

The same compact format can also be relevant for barcode reading, assembly verification, positioning, robotic vision, measurement, laboratory systems and automated test equipment.

In each case, the reason for choosing the right-angle design is similar: the required image can be captured, but the conventional camera arrangement does not fit comfortably within the machine architecture.

90 Degree Camera vs. Conventional Industrial Camera

A 90 degree camera is not automatically a better choice than a conventional industrial camera.

If the machine provides sufficient space for a standard camera, there may be no reason to change the housing format. Conventional cameras remain suitable for a wide range of machine vision installations.

The 90 degree format becomes valuable when mounting height, enclosure depth, cable positioning or nearby machine components restrict camera placement.

For this reason, camera geometry should be selected according to the actual installation rather than treated as a performance specification.

Consider the Complete Imaging System

A compact camera housing alone does not guarantee a compact machine vision system.

The camera needs to work together with the lens, illumination, mounting hardware, cables and software. The required working distance must also be maintained while capturing the correct field of view.

For example, selecting a smaller camera may not solve the installation problem if the chosen lens is too large for the available space. Likewise, moving the camera closer to the target may affect the field of view or require a different focal length.

Evaluating these components together makes it easier to build a system that fits mechanically while still producing the image required by the application.

After installation on our laboratory we were surprised again of the high quality of the photos and the versatility of this system. (options in Galaxy viewer and integration in Python. Recently we had an issue with the software and the customer support was able to give us the relevant information to fix it within one day. The next time we need a camera we will not be looking to other suppliers but contact GeT Cameras immediately.

The SDK looks like the SDK from Basler so I felt directly comfortable with it. The camera and lens was a perfect match and now I'm able to read small DMC codes on large products with just a single camera.
