Machine vision enclosures protect industrial cameras, lenses and cable connections from dust, moisture, water splashes and accidental adjustment. The standard and aluminum models are designed for compact industrial cameras. The XL machine vision camera housing provides more space for larger camera bodies, connectors and lenses.

For lenses wider than approximately 30 mm, protruding focus or aperture screws may need to be replaced with flat screws. The complete camera, lens and cable combination should always be checked before ordering.

How to Choose a Machine Vision Camera Housing

The correct machine vision camera housing must fit the camera, lens, connectors and cables without obstructing the optical path. Check the following details before selecting an enclosure.

Camera dimensions

Measure the width, height and length of the camera body, including protruding connectors and mounting points.

Lens diameter

Measure the widest part of the lens, including focus screws, aperture screws and locking mechanisms.

Lens length

Measure from the front of the camera body to the front of the lens. Longer lenses may require additional extension rings.

Connector position

Confirm that the data, power and I/O connectors have sufficient clearance inside the enclosure.

Camera interface

Check whether the vision system uses GigE, PoE, USB3 or a separate power and I/O connection.

Operating temperature

Consider both the heat generated by the camera and the ambient temperature around the machine.

Mounting space

Leave enough room to install the housing, remove the lens tube and route the cables correctly.

Protection requirement

Confirm that IP67 protection is appropriate for the production environment and cleaning conditions.

Check Your Enclosure Compatibility

IP67 Protective Housing for Machine Vision

IP67 protective housing for machine vision prevents dust ingress and protects the enclosed equipment against temporary water immersion under defined test conditions.

These enclosures can be suitable for applications exposed to:

  • Dust and production debris
  • Humid operating conditions
  • Rain or occasional outdoor exposure
  • Water splashes
  • Accidental contact with liquids
  • Operator contact with the camera or lens

IP67 does not automatically make an enclosure suitable for steam cleaning, chemical exposure or high-temperature, high-pressure washdowns. These environments may require IP69K protection, corrosion-resistant materials or a specialized hygienic housing.

When Is a Standard IP67 Enclosure Not Enough?

A standard IP67 enclosure may not be sufficient when the application involves aggressive cleaning, extreme temperatures, chemicals or hazardous environments.

Additional application review is recommended for:

Modular Lens Tubes for Different Lens Lengths

Modular lens tubes allow the enclosure length to be adapted to different machine vision lenses.

Extension rings can be added or removed when the same camera is combined with lenses of different lengths. This provides flexibility for OEM machines that use several fields of view or inspection distances while keeping the enclosure design consistent.

The removable lens tube also provides access to the focus and aperture controls during installation. Once the system has been adjusted, closing the housing helps prevent operators from unintentionally changing the lens settings.

The optical window transmits visible and near-infrared wavelengths from approximately 400 to 1000 nm. Applications using UV, SWIR, polarization or high-power laser illumination should be reviewed separately.

Waterproof Cable Entry for GigE, USB3 and I/O

The waterproof cable-entry system supports compatible GigE, USB3 and I/O connections while protecting the cable opening against dust and moisture.

This allows many systems to use standard machine vision cables instead of requiring a complete specialized IP67 cable assembly. The cable diameter, connector size, flexibility and bend radius must still match the enclosure entry.

High-flex robotic cables, large connectors or multiple cable connections may require additional review.

A reliable enclosure installation should be evaluated together with the:

  • Available machine space

Selecting these components as one complete system helps prevent mechanical, optical and thermal problems during installation.

Heat Management Inside an Industrial Camera Enclosure

Heat management prevents the industrial camera from exceeding its recommended operating temperature inside the enclosure.

The aluminum camera enclosure helps transfer heat away from the camera body. When the ambient temperature exceeds approximately 35°C, attaching the enclosure to a metal machine profile or another thermally conductive structure may improve heat dissipation.

The final operating temperature depends on:

  • Camera power consumption
  • Frame rate and exposure settings
  • Ambient temperature
  • Airflow around the enclosure
  • Enclosure material
  • Mounting method
  • Nearby heat-generating equipment

Applications involving high-power cameras or elevated temperatures should be tested under realistic production conditions.

Mounting and Positioning the Camera Enclosure

A machine vision enclosure must be mounted securely enough to maintain the camera’s field of view throughout production.

The mounting arrangement should allow:

  • Stable positioning of the camera and lens
  • Sufficient adjustment during installation
  • Access to the lens tube and cable entry
  • Clearance around connectors and cables
  • Heat transfer to the machine structure where required
  • Protection against vibration or accidental movement

Document the final position after installation so the imaging system can be returned to the same alignment following maintenance.

Custom Camera Housings for OEM Machines

A neutral machine vision camera housing allows OEMs and machine builders to create a consistent appearance across their equipment.

The enclosure exterior can be customized with a company logo, identification label or color, depending on the project requirements. This is particularly useful when different camera manufacturers are used across the same machine series.

Branding should not cover seals, removable components, mounting surfaces, cable entries or areas required for heat transfer.

It was easy to integrate and USB3 Vision interface allowed our software team to get started quickly. The sales guy was very helpful with selecting the hardware for us. We are happy that we selected the USB3 board-level camera instead of a Mipi embedded vision camera as we didn't require now the additional driver development.

After installation on our laboratory we were surprised again of the high quality of the photos and the versatility of this system. (options in Galaxy viewer and integration in Python. Recently we had an issue with the software and the customer support was able to give us the relevant information to fix it within one day. The next time we need a camera we will not be looking to other suppliers but contact GeT Cameras immediately.

Unfortunately they don't offer a loan service, but I decided to try it. I had the cameras in house within 2 weeks and connection was easy. The SDK looks like the SDK from Basler so I felt directly comfortable with it. The camera and lens was a perfect match and now I'm able to read small DMC codes on large products with just a single camera.
